Environmental Panel, brought to you by MAREP and SAME Mid-Maryland

Come and learn about current environmental topics from government and industry speakers, including USEPA, Maryland Department of the Environment, and environmental consulting firms from the DC metro area! The panel will discuss the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the environmental sector, including government and private-sector programs, and ways in which public and private sector organizations are responding to the pandemic.

Moderator:

Fred Carey, PE, President, Potomac-Hudson Engineering, Inc.

Mr. Carey has over 27 years of experience providing environmental planning, engineering, analysis, and compliance services to federal and private sector clients, supporting NEPA analysis and related studies and multimedia environmental compliance evaluations. Mr. Carey’s expertise includes analysis of critical environmental and human health issues related to diverse infrastructure and defense-related actions, including the siting of federal and municipal facilities. Fred is currently a Board Member of MAREP.

Speakers:

Gina Soscia, Community Involvement Coordinator, Environmental Protection Agency

Ms. Soscia has served as a Community Involvement Coordinator in EPA Region 3’s Superfund Program for the past six years. She works with urban, rural and suburban communities through the Mid-Atlantic Region. Her talk will focus on how Region 3’s Community Involvement Program has adjusted its outreach approach during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gina will also briefly touch on impacts COVID-19 has had on EPA’s Superfund Program, including construction schedules, funding, and Field Health and Safety Practices.

Suzanne Dorsey, Assistant Secretary, Maryland Department of the Environment

Dr. Suzanne Dorsey works with water and science administration on Chesapeake Bay Restoration and on major issues that require cross agency collaboration like climate change and water quality nutrient trading. One of the most fulfilling aspects of her career is the opportunity to promote young, diverse scientists and leaders into positions where their skills will make an important impact.  Suzanne will discuss the impact of COVID-19 on MDE programs and operations, and present an overview of some of the priority areas the agency is working on during the pandemic and moving forward.

Chris Rua, CHMM, CEA, Senior Scientist, Potomac-Hudson Engineering, Inc.

Mr. Rua is a Senior Environmental Scientist with Potomac-Hudson Engineering, Inc. (PHE) with nearly 20 years of environmental consulting experience and an extensive background in environmental compliance, remediation, planning, and occupational safety and health. Earlier this year, Chris supported a government client with developing a cleaning and disinfection protocol for two buildings, and then overseeing the implementation of that protocol by a third-party contractor. Chris will walk through the project, describe the protocols he helped develop, and discuss some common deficiencies identified with its implementation.

Ryan Duckett, PE, Project Engineer, SCS Engineers

Mr. Duckett is based out of SCS Engineer’s Richmond, VA office and has over eight years’ experience working in a solid waste research or consulting capacity. He currently serves as a Project Engineer for design/engineering projects, financial analyses and planning efforts for collection, transfer, recycling, organics management, and disposal facilities and programs. Ryan will present an overview of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impacts on the trash and recycling industry in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. His talk will examine how the pandemic has disrupted all aspects of the solid waste industry, and what lies ahead for municipalities and private industry.
